The Hockey SCChool

The academy of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Hockey Section

Founded in August 2021, the academy has been running weekly sessions in the late afternoon at the iconic Padang, home ground to the SCC.

Official Launch of the Hockey SCChool

The honourable Mr Edwin Tong, was aptly invited as the guest of honour along with Sport Singapore (SportSG) CEO, Mr Lim Teck Yin and the President of the Singapore Hockey Federation, Mr Mathavan Devadas.
"Getting kids to play is crucial for their holistic well being as they grow and become outstanding members of our society." - Mr Tong

The Hockey Section celebrated the official launch of the Hockey SCChool on 6 September 2022. The Hockey SCChool is founded by Mr Intekhab Khan (Convenor), Mr Subhas Nathan (former Convenor) and Mr Kanan Packrisamy (Head Coach since 2011). The academy now boasts 58 kids on our roster.

Mission

To be the academy of choice for aspiring players aged 5 and up and to create a pathway for them to continue playing hockey as members of the SCC.

Vision

To be the leading academy whereby kids of all levels join to become the best hockey players they can be.

The Padang is a prestigious location to be playing hockey at.

Flanked by the National Gallery, nestled amongst the old Parliament House and the Victoria Theatre, and watched over by the Victoria Theatre Clock Tower and the Marina Bay Sands.

One would be hard-pressed to find a better location to play hockey right in the heart of the Civic District and downtown Singapore.

Coaching Philosophy

INDIVIDUAL v TEAM

At the Hockey SCChool, the focus will be on the development of each kid and less on the team.

The academy will create strong players.

We believe that strong players will be able to fit into any team including the ones at SCC.

FEAR MANAGEMENT

Right from the outset, we will make it clear that making mistakes is acceptable.

By withdrawing the fear of making mistakes, we believe that true learning begins.

TRAININGS

The sessions will be highly focused on technical development, i.e. skills enhancement.

Each session will have equal measure of fun elements and technical skills training.

All drills will have an objective of why players have to master it.

COMPETIVENESS

Prepare every player to step into the pitch wanting to win.

Teach players how enjoy the joys of victory but also emphasise how to deal with the agony of defeat.

We will inculcate in each player that by giving your best every time you actually are already a champion even when you do not win.

1 Coach : 8 Players

Besides the venue, the kids who sign up will have a good player to coach ratio which is amongst the best on offer in the marketplace.

Players will be placed in appropriate groups based on a combination of age and ability.

"Just because you want to win, don't compromise the quality"

Head Coach

I have been coaching for almost 3 decades and the beautiful thing about this job is that I continue to learn on a daily basis. I have formed some maxims to ensure that I continue to be relevant and provide a meaningful service.

As a coach I always give my best. I ensure that everyone is given a fair chance to participate and contribute and I plan everyone's development as a team and as an individual. I am relentless in my pursuit of ensuring that we eradicate the fear of making mistakes when training kids. I come from a rare breed of coaches that work from the developmental stage right up to high performance.

Working with five year olds in the morning to former Olympians in the evening is the norm for me. I worry less about results and focus more on performance, with successful outcomes in the latter, success in the former is inevitably achieved.

To be a champion is someone who always gives their best, come what may. They have an unshakeable resolve to give their utmost. This is the attitude I hope to cultivate wherever I coach. Winning titles and the like is also important but not more than the individual effort. The sum of everyone’s endeavours will deliver success, that I am sure of. I have been successful in inculcating this over the many years of my coaching career and am steadfast in sticking to this mantra irrespective of the circumstances.

My coaching career has taken me to five Singapore Government schools, five International Schools, one Australian University and club, six different clubs in Singapore and the Singapore Masters National Team.

My experience is vast, diverse but relevant. Join me and prepare for a wonderful journey. The Hockey SCChool is going to rock your world!
